About The Detroit Free Press / Talmer Bank Marathon
Our marathon course offers international appeal, traversing both downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. You will run through historic neighborhoods, around beautiful Belle Isle, and along the spectacular RiverWalk.
Since 1978, runners from Michigan, the United States and all over the world have traveled to Detroit to take part in our marathon. It has become an event that encompasses people from all walks of life, not just elite runners. They run the marathon for different reasons: to qualify for the Boston Marathon, to raise money for charity, to honor a loved one, to celebrate weight loss or to show that they have overcome tremendous odds.
Competitor magazine has included Detroit when picking its 26 most memorable miles from marathons across the country. The magazine called the mile over the bridge as “more scenic” but the mile through the tunnel the “more memorable.” Rodale publishing (parent of Runner’s World magazine) has selected Detroit as one of its 10 best events for first-time marathoners. Marathon & Beyond magazine has included Detroit it its ranking of the Top 25 finisher medals for North American marathons.
